while attitudes toward cycling are changing, so are bikes themselves. electronic bicycles—also known as e-bikes—have hit the scene and are making a major impression across americaand the uk.
while they look like normal two-wheelers, they have a built-in electric motor for thrust; most kicking in with pedalling and hitting the relevant button on your handlebars.
BUT (WE HEAR YOU ASK!) IF THE BIKE IS DOING THE WORK, WHERE’S THE EXERCISE?
the trick to making your e-bike a fitness tool is to use the motor just enough to keep going. cycle until you’re either wiped out or you hit a steep hill, and then rev the engine for that extra oomph!
IS IT CHEATING TO USE AN E-BIKE?
there is a common myth that electric bikes are like scooters or mopeds, but this simply isn't true. e-bikes are what’s called “pedal-assist”, which means they use a small electric motor to boost the power created by your own pedalling.
this means that to ride an e-bike you still have to pedal, which still takes effort. and that's why it's not cheating — you pedal and the bike just boosts your power.
MAKING CYCLING MORE ACCESSIBLE
it's true that riding e-bikes is easier than riding a normal bike. it's more convenient and less effort.
but this is the best thing about it — it makes cycling more accessible. electric bikes do make cycling that bit easier, but this only makes people more likely to do it. we applaud anything that stops people being put off by cycling, especially if it helps achieve what we all want — more people cycling!
we have a full-range of e-bikes available at cycle 360.
we encourage you to come in, chat to our team about what your requirements are and even have a go – we have demo bikes you can take away and explore in your own time on a morning or afternoon!
