Getting the right size bike for your child isn’t just about comfort — it’s about confidence and safety too. A well-fitted bike makes learning to ride easier, helps build good habits, and keeps every ride fun (and tantrum-free!).

Unlike adult bikes, kids’ bikes are sized by wheel diameter, not frame size. Here’s a quick guide to help you pick the right one based on your child’s height and inside leg measurement.
| Wheel Size | Age (approx.) | Child’s Height | Inside Leg | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10/12” | 2 – 4 yrs | 85 – 100 cm | 35 – 43 cm | Balance bikes or first pedal bikes — perfect for learning to ride. |
| 14” | 3 – 5 yrs | 95 – 110 cm | 40 – 50 cm | Great for growing riders who’ve mastered the basics. |
| 16” | 4 – 6 yrs | 105 – 120 cm | 45 – 55 cm | Ideal for building confidence; often comes with removable stabilisers. |
| 18” | 5 – 7 yrs | 110 – 125 cm | 50 – 60 cm | A solid in-between size before moving up to geared bikes. |
| 20” | 6 – 9 yrs | 120 – 135 cm | 55 – 65 cm | Mini mountain or hybrid bikes — geared and ready for adventures. |
| 24” | 8 – 11 yrs | 130 – 145 cm | 60 – 70 cm | Junior bikes that look and feel like small adult bikes. |
| 26” / XS Adult | 10+ yrs | 145 cm+ | 65 cm+ | The step up to adult sizing, often matching adult specs. |
How to Measure
- Height: Have your child stand straight (no shoes) and measure from floor to top of their head.
- Inside leg: Measure from crotch to floor, feet flat.
Quick Tips
- On smaller bikes (12–16”), both feet should touch the ground when seated.
- On larger bikes (20”+), just the toes should touch — that’s normal!
- Avoid “buying big” to grow into. It’s safer and more fun to ride a bike that fits now.
